An Unlikely Journey
From 2013-2016, artist Brooke Bailey made a series of 99 collages in an attempt to read and understand the Gospel of Saint Mark. What started off as an informal art journaling project became a deep immersion in the teachings of the adult Jesus and a spiritual experience that led to Brooke’s confirmation in the Catholic Church.
“Hey Mark” is Brooke’s extremely personal response to Mark, verse by verse. Mark is not an easy story. There is no Christmas star, no glorious resurrection scene. It is bleak, terse, to the point, written by someone who was probably under threat of imminent death. But Mark’s portrayal of nonviolent resistance in a time of extreme oppression remains one of the strongest messages of hope ever told.
Artist Talk and Art Journaling Workshop
July 16 after church in Hauser Building, Brooke will give an informal talk about her process. Watercolors, magazine pictures and glue will be available — come pick a verse from Mark, and try a simple art collage. What does Mark say to you?
“Hey Mark” will be on display in Hauser Hall through July.
