Life ebbs and flows. There are times we are happy and times we are sad. Music has always been an avenue of support in all of my life’s situations. Music touches me unlike any movie or novel. As a singer, I search for the whole package in a song. Words, melodies, harmonies, and rhythm that all sync together to create a mood or a clear understanding of a feeling—that, to me, is a masterpiece. With all the genres of music in the world, you are sure to find something that matches your state of mind.
“O Rest in the Lord” is the title of a beautiful aria in Felix Mendelssohn’s oratorio, Elijah. The long legato phrases of the alto voice paired with the mellow strings makes this piece a treat to hear and to sing. The text is, “O rest in the Lord, wait patiently for Him and He shall give thee thy heart’s desires. Commit thy way unto Him, and trust in Him. And fret not thy self because of evil doers.” There are many times in my life when I need to be reminded to relax. It’s all in God’s hands and he will never fail me. Take peace in knowing that you are not alone in life’s struggles.
“Rejoice in the Lord Alway” by Henry Purcell is a choral piece featuring a trio of voices along with strings and organ accompaniment. The bouncy theme, “Rejoice in the Lord alway, and again I say rejoice!” always brings a smile to my face each time a hear it. In the middle of the piece, the texture thins as the trio sings the beautiful text from Philippians 4, “Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Jesus Christ our Lord.” The piece ends with a reprise of the opening remarks reminding us to rejoice! I love being reminded to give thanks for all that has been given to me. Gratitude is your own pair of rose-colored glasses. The perception of life as a literal gift can do wonders for your soul. I love how music has brought me closer to God. I am reminded of the many roles he plays in our lives. He is our comforter. He is our joy. And how wonderful to know that he loves us no matter what.
