The story of Jonah has been a recurring theme over the past few weeks. Patrick shared what he learned years ago about how Jonah got out of the whale; by saying ‘yes’ to God’s call. Obeying that call, Jonah walks into the large city of Nineveh and proclaims that God will overthrow the city in forty days. They believe, repent and fast (people and animals alike!) God changes his mind and does not raze the city.
In these forty days of Lent, I am reflecting on what God might be calling me to and changing in me. I have traded in too much time spent scrolling on my personal social media for time spent meditating, making lists of dreams and goals, and praying for God to reveal His will to me. Have you ever felt that tug on your heart that is difficult to identify, but you know it is God inviting you into His story of reconciliation in the world in a new way? I pray you have, as I am now. It is exciting but terrifying at the same time. Just as Jonah ran, we run. Our God pursues us however. Lovingly, annoyingly pursues. Inviting us time and time again into his beautiful kingdom fulfilling narrative.
What role is our God calling you to play?
It will take all of us.
It’s the only way.
Do not turn away,
if you do, turn around.
We’ll do this together,
a changed world, profound.
